Riverfest 2024

Thames River with banner reading "Riverfest24"

Join us for the third annual Western Riverfest, co-organized by the Indigenous Students' Association, Indigenous Student Centre, and Western Sustainability. Throughout the month of September, take part in events that celebrate and connect with Deshkan Ziibi (Thames River), an integral part of Western's natural heritage.

Western's Open Space Strategy identified the importance of reconnecting the campus community to the river. Riverfest provides students, staff, and faculty to (re)introduce themselves to the trails, green spaces on campus, and the river.

Take some time and introduce yourself to Deshkan Ziibi by listening to a wonderful episode in the mbwaach'idiwag podcast that was created for Indigenous Awareness Week 2021. In the episode Walking Along the Deshkan Ziibing with Summer Bressette, hosted by Sara Mai Chitty, Summer shares about her take on land acknowledgements, relationships to land, Deshkan Ziibing and Indigenous nationhood. Try to find some time to yourself to listen to this podcast while out in nature, along the river.
