About Us

Sustainability at Western

Western is committed to advancing all aspects of sustainability, including economic, social and environmental. Our understanding of sustainability continues to evolve alongside current research, trends, and societal perceptions. We recognize the importance of the UN SDGs to guide our work, as they represent some of the most pressing challenges of our time. We also recognize the intersections between the 17 SDGs, and the necessity of interdisciplinary approaches.

Our relationship to the land Western is situated upon is critical for our commitment to sustainability. We strive to be responsible stewards of the land which requires advancing Truth and Reconciliation. We honour that Indigenous peoples have historically, and continue to, live in harmony with the land to protect the natural systems that sustain all life on earth.

Some of Western Sustainability's current initiatives include waste reduction and diversion, engagement with the campus community, energy and water conservation, and carbon reduction. We have set an ambitious target to be net zero by 2050, and continue to make investments that move us closer to that goal. We aim to build leadership and confidence within the campus community on sustainability topics, and we cultivate partnerships across Western and externally to strengthen our capacity and outreach.

Universities are unique hubs of research, teaching, and learning that provide the right conditions for innovation and collaboration for sustainability solutions. Western Sustainability is focused on building networks and connections across campus and in the broader community to braid sustainable approaches into all that we do.
