GHG Inventory

Background

In 2009, a new provincial Regulation was approved, mandating the quantification and reporting of GHG emissions starting in 2011. Western decided to act proactively and during summer 2010 conducted a comprehensive inventory of its GHG emissions from Main Campus. We now report our carbon emissions to federal and provincial agencies every year. On top of that, Western has the emission assertions verified by an accredited third party and voluntarily report them to AASHE under its STARS program.

2009 Emissions

Emissions from scopes 1, 2 and 3 were quantified for this year. This year became Western’s baseline to track down its GHG emissions. Western’s emissions were as follows:

SourceCO2e Emissions [Metric Tonnes]

Scope 1

53,901

Scope 1 (extended)*

57,289

Scope 2

29,399

Scope 3

9,862

* Includes minor portable equipment, Western’s fleet, refrigerants and chemicals

Western’s total carbon footprint was calculated to be 96,550 Metric Tonnes of Co2e.

2010 Emissions

Western’s GHG emissions from scope 1 were quantified for this year for Main Campus. Western’s GHG emissions were 51,364 Metric Tonnes of CO2e; a reduction of 4.7% with respect to the Scope 1 baseline.

2011 Emissions

Western’s GHG emissions from scope 1 were quantified for this year for Main Campus. Western’s GHG emissions were 50,180 Metric Tonnes of CO2e; a reduction of 2.3% with respect to the previous year. Compared to the scope 1 baseline, Western’s direct emissions have decreased by 6.9%.

2012 Emissions

Western’s GHG emissions from scope 1 were quantified for this year for Main Campus. Western’s GHG emissions were 47,7675 Metric Tonnes of CO2e; a reduction of 4.9% with respect to the previous year. Compared to the scope 1 baseline, Western’s direct emissions have decreased by 11.5%.

2013 Emissions

Western’s GHG emissions from scope 1 were quantified for this year for Main Campus. Western’s GHG emissions were 47,307 Metric Tonnes of CO2e; a reduction of .8% with respect to the previous year. Compared to the scope 1 baseline, Western’s direct emissions have decreased by 12.3%.

2014 Emissions

Western’s GHG emissions from scope 1 were quantified for this year for Main Campus. Western’s GHG emissions were 47,360 Metric Tonnes of CO2e; an increase of 0.1% with respect to the previous year. Compared to the scope 1 baseline, Western’s direct emissions have decreased by 12.1%

2015 Emissions

Western’s GHG emissions from scope 1 were quantified for this year for Main Campus. Western’s GHG emissions were 52,615 Metric Tonnes of CO2e; an increase of 11.1% with respect to the previous year. Compared to the scope 1 baseline, Western’s direct emissions have decreased by 2.4%.

With the launch of Western's Sustainability Vision and Action Plan, the university has set a goal to reduce its main campus direct greenhouse gas emissions below its 2009 levels.
