Incorporate Meatless Mondays into your diet!
By reducing the amount of meat in your diet you can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the amount of land and water used for the extra crop production and pastureland necessary for animals. Here are some interesting facts about the environmental effects of meat consumption:
1) Producing one pound of meat consumes anywhere from 7-10 pounds of grains.
2) The Center for Sustainable Economy has stated that globally, it has been estimated that 18% of all greenhouse gas emissions are associated with meat consumption.
3) Producing one pound of beef requires 6,810 litres of water (see photo below for the virtual water consumption of other food items)
4) Chooseveg.com has written that according to Dr. David Brubaker at Johns Hopkins University’s Center for a Livable Future, “The way that we breed animals for food is a threat to the planet. It pollutes our environment while consuming huge amounts of water, grain, petroleum, pesticides and drugs. The results are disastrous.”
Hospitality Services at Western also promotes Meatless Mondays, and have stated that, “Going meatless once a week may help reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity.”
